Ebook About
A story of resilience and redemption set against one of America’s defining moments—the Dust Bowl. It’s 1935 in Oklahoma, and lives are determined by the dust. Fourteen-year-old Kathryn Baile, a spitfire born with a severe clubfoot, is coming of age in desperate times. Once her beloved older sister marries, Kathryn’s only comfort comes in the well-worn pages of her favorite book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Then Kathryn’s father decides to relocate to Indianapolis, and only the promise of a surgery to finally make her “normal” convinces Kathryn to leave Oklahoma behind. But disaster strikes along the way, and Kathryn must rely on her grit and the ragged companions she meets on the road if she is to complete her journey.Back in Boise City, Melissa Baile Mayfield is the newest member of the wealthiest family in all of Cimarron County. In spite of her poor, rural upbringing, Melissa has just married the town’s most eligible bachelor and is determined to be everything her husband—and her new social class—expects her to be. But as the drought tightens its grip, Henry’s true colors are revealed. Melissa covers her bruises with expensive new makeup and struggles to reconcile her affluent life with that of her starving neighbors. Haunted by the injustice and broken by Henry’s refusal to help, Melissa secretly defies her husband, risking her life to follow God’s leading. Two sisters, struggling against unspeakable hardship, discover that even in their darkest times, they are still united in spirit, and God is still with them, drawing them home.

Book If It Rains Review :

If it Rains has been my most unexpected book of the year so far. That is, I didn't set out to read it. I didn't know who Jennifer L. Wright was. But I found If it Rains on a list of upcoming books. I found the summary intriguing. And now I'm thirsty for more of Jennifer's work. The mix of hope and oppression, despair and resilience, fantasy and reality, in this book is nothing short of amazing.First off, Jennifer did her homework on the Oklahoma Dust Bowl. I place more value on character and plot than setting, but my test of a truly good setting is, did I feel like I was there? In If It Rains, I certainly did. Because of that, I enjoyed the setting, even and perhaps especially the negative parts. Jennifer made clear these characters had the capability and the hope needed to rise above the dust, the filth, the stink, the despair--and I stuck around to watch them triumph. I also stuck around because Jennifer made so clear, without preaching, how real the setting was. Not just, "Real people experienced this," but, "Real people had to live this way. They made the tough choices. They saw and heard the horrible things. And yet, they maintained hope and faith." It's powerful stuff. As for those real people...well, Kathryn, Melissa, Henry, Annie, and all the others passed another test. They are now real to me. I especially enjoyed Kathryn, because I could identify with her somewhat, but also because Jennifer succeeded in creating an unlikable lead. This isn't to say Kathryn is a total brat or unjustified in her actions. In fact, she's completely justified...if we look at her through the lens of purely human nature. It was convicting, and oddly comforting, to know I had found her in my own mirror before. But that made her turnaround, her repentance if you will, all the sweeter when it did happen. And I appreciated that even though Kathryn did become the "star" she wanted to be, she never became an achingly sweet, perfect, ideal 1930s Oklahoma woman. She remained real. The same is true for the other characters. Throughout the book, I either rooted for or against them. I loved watching them grow. And as with Kathryn, I loved how they were different than their archetypal counterparts. Melissa could've been the typical overly submissive, scared, abused wife. Instead, she gets to be strong. She gets to have deep faith while still making and learning from sinful choices. She gets to confront her privilege without losing herself, because in that, she gets to fight for herself.Henry could've been a flat, typical villain, but even though he is a terrible person, his motives are clear. You see his entitlement, his sincere belief he should have whatever and whoever he wants, and you can glean a cautionary tale from that. Annie could've been stereotypically and understandably bitter, lazy, or angry. Instead, she becomes a conduit of truth and freedom, and a real-life lesson in what "being Jesus" to others means. In fact, Annie and Melissa's relationship reminds me of different facets of Jesus--Melissa becomes an example of Jesus the mercy-giver and self-sacrificing one, while Annie becomes Melissa's example of Jesus the teacher and Jesus the critic (convicting, sometimes harsh, but never unloving).Speaking of Jesus, the spiritual threads here were unexpected for me, too. I turned pages late into the night partially to see how Melissa and Kathryn would relate to God in the end. I especially wanted to know if Kathryn would come to a realization of God's love for her. She did--both sisters did. But the way they do, and the circumstances leading to it, are atypical and devoid of sentiment, which I appreciated. Kathryn's epiphany does seem a little sudden, but taken with the rest of the story, it works. And while Melissa comes to her epiphany in a desperate, life-or-death situation I would normally dislike, that works for her, too.In fact, the circumstances leading to the sisters' epiphanies themselves might be my favorite part of If it Rains. Authors are getting better at avoiding this, but so many times they, especially Christians, paint characters as needing to be "fixed" before they can truly experience the love and purpose God has for them. Introverted people are assumed to be sad and in need of becoming more social. Overweight people need to drop several pounds before they can have any confidence. Disabled people need to be cured, or taken under the permanent wing of charity. Villains need to be wholly forgiven and do a total 180 in personality. Jennifer Wright never fell for any of this. Instead, she let the characters breathe. She let them grow, but still be who they were--how God created them, in the case of Kathryn and Melissa at least. And it's wonderful. Finally, I give Jennifer brownie points for all the Wizard of Oz tie-ins. Some are more obvious, and some are subtle or perhaps not even there, depending on who you ask (for example, I found it interesting that the Cowardly Lion stand-in was named Bert, since his actor was Bert Lahr in the 1937 movie). But however many references you find, they're pleasant surprises, neat little treasures underneath all that dust and dirt and hopelessness. They hearken back to hope in a non-preachy way. They don't encourage naive belief in fairy tales, but rather a belief in a better, higher, more hopeful way to live. There are a few slight elements I might change in this book. For instance, I enjoyed Kathryn's journey but was discouraged that almost no one showed her actual kindness, or interest in who she was as a person. I also really wanted Kathryn to confront Helen and say something like, "From the day you met me, you wanted me institutionalized, so don't act like the victim in front of me, ever. You literally left me in a ditch, and family doesn't do that, so no, I will not be your family." But then again...she kind of did. And then again, the character choices Jennifer made about Helen and Kathryn's companions were probably conscious choices, based on the reality of the setting. So I won't take a star away. What I will do is recommend this book, and say you are in for an important and gratifying journey.
